Zoomlion Nigeria Limited has completed the rehabilitation of the 1.2-kilometre access road to the Olusosun Disposal Facility in Lagos, a move expected to improve waste evacuation operations and reduce truck congestion at the state’s largest landfill.
The project, completed in 26 days, was unveiled during a close-out ceremony attended by government officials, environmental stakeholders, waste management operators, civil society organisations and members of the media.
The rehabilitation restores one of the busiest operational corridors leading to the Olusosun Disposal Facility, enabling waste collection trucks to access the site more efficiently while reducing delays associated with waste disposal.
Speaking at the event, the Managing Director of the Lagos Waste Management Authority, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, commended Zoomlion Nigeria for responding promptly to the state’s request for intervention.
“We recognised the urgent need to rehabilitate this critical section of the landfill and reached out to Zoomlion. They responded immediately. That level of commitment deserves commendation,” Gbadegesin said.
He explained that prolonged rainfall had damaged sections of Road E within the Olusosun facility, slowing the movement of compactor trucks conveying municipal waste from different parts of Lagos.
According to him, the rehabilitated access road, alongside newly constructed waste disposal platforms, will allow more trucks to offload waste simultaneously, reduce turnaround time and eliminate operational bottlenecks.
Gbadegesin said the intervention demonstrated the value of public-private partnerships in strengthening waste management infrastructure and improving environmental service delivery across the state.
He also described the project as a major milestone in the collaboration between LAWMA and Zoomlion Nigeria, noting that the company executed the intervention as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives.
Speaking during the ceremony, the Managing Director of Zoomlion Nigeria Limited, Mrs. Habibah Abubakar, said the rehabilitation marked the first phase of a broader partnership with LAWMA aimed at modernising Lagos’ waste management infrastructure.
She noted that the Olusosun Disposal Facility receives about half of the municipal solid waste generated daily in Lagos, making uninterrupted access to the site critical to the state’s sanitation system.
“Our goal is not simply to move waste from one location to another. We are building integrated systems that recover value from waste while creating cleaner, healthier and more sustainable communities,” Abubakar said.

She disclosed that although the company initially planned to complete the project within 21 days, unforeseen challenges extended the timeline by five days.
“We initially set ourselves a target of 21 days. On the twentieth day, our Project Engineer informed me that unforeseen challenges might affect delivery. I told him we could not return to Lagos State without fulfilling our commitment. He requested an additional five days, and together we completed the project in 26 days,” she added.
According to her, the completed road will improve operational efficiency, reduce waiting time for waste collection vehicles, lower operating costs for waste managers and contribute to cleaner communities across Lagos.
Also speaking, the National President of the Association of Waste Managers of Nigeria, Dr. Olugbenga Adebola, described the rehabilitation as a timely intervention that would improve waste evacuation across the state.
He said efficient access to disposal facilities remained critical to effective waste management, noting that the project would ease congestion, improve truck turnaround time and enhance operations across the waste management value chain.
The rehabilitation forms part of ongoing efforts by the Lagos State Government to strengthen waste management infrastructure as it pursues a transition from conventional waste disposal to a more sustainable circular economy model driven by recycling, resource recovery and improved environmental sanitation.
