Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial nerve centre and Africa’s fastest-growing megacity, generates thousands of tonnes of municipal solid waste every day.
Managing this enormous volume of waste requires more than routine collection; it depends on resilient infrastructure capable of ensuring that refuse moves efficiently from neighbourhoods to treatment, recycling and disposal facilities.
Recognising this challenge, Zoomlion Nigeria Limited has intensified its collaboration with the Lagos State Government through strategic investments designed to modernise the state’s waste management system.
Its latest Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) intervention at the Olusosun Waste Disposal Facility demonstrates how targeted infrastructure investments can significantly improve operational efficiency while strengthening environmental sustainability.
The company recently completed the rehabilitation of approximately 1.2 kilometres of the Olusosun access road and constructed reinforced waste tipping platforms, removing one of the most critical bottlenecks affecting waste evacuation operations in Lagos.
The project has already begun improving access to Nigeria’s busiest waste disposal facility, enabling waste trucks to move more efficiently while reducing delays that had long affected refuse collection across the metropolis.
For Zoomlion Nigeria, the Olusosun intervention represents only the first phase of broader investments aimed at transforming Lagos’ waste management infrastructure.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, the company’s Managing Director, Mrs. Habiba Abubakar, said the organisation remains committed to delivering practical environmental solutions capable of producing measurable impact.
She explained that the company’s objective extends beyond transporting refuse.

We are here to build infrastructure, support government initiatives and contribute to a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable future for our country.”
Reflecting on the execution of the project, she credited its successful delivery to teamwork, determination and the commitment of the company’s leadership.
According to her, although the company initially targeted completion within 21 days, unforeseen circumstances required a short extension before the project was delivered within 26 days.
She also acknowledged the support of the Chairman of the Jospong Group, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, alongside the dedication of the engineering team led by Engr. Francis Akoto, describing their efforts as evidence of the company’s culture of excellence
For years, deteriorating road conditions within the Olusosun Disposal Facility created serious operational difficulties for Lagos’ waste management ecosystem.
Private Sector Participant (PSP) operators and waste haulage contractors frequently spent hours navigating damaged sections of the access road.
Long queues of refuse trucks became a daily occurrence, resulting in delayed waste evacuation, excessive fuel consumption, frequent vehicle breakdowns and rising maintenance costs.
These delays also reduced the number of disposal trips trucks could complete daily, ultimately slowing waste collection services in several parts of Lagos.
Understanding that efficient infrastructure remains central to effective waste management, Zoomlion Nigeria undertook the rehabilitation project in partnership with the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) as part of its CSR commitment to environmental sustainability.
The intervention restored smooth access to the landfill while creating reinforced waste tipping platforms that allow multiple trucks to discharge waste simultaneously, significantly improving operational turnaround.
Speaking during the commissioning of the project, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, praised Zoomlion Nigeria for responding swiftly after the agency requested support.
According to him, the rehabilitation addressed one of the most pressing infrastructure challenges confronting waste evacuation operations within the facility.
“We recognised the urgent need to improve access within this critical section of the Olusosun facility, reached out to Zoomlion Nigeria and they responded immediately.
“Their intervention will significantly improve operations and we appreciate their commitment to supporting Lagos State.”
Gbadegesin noted that improved access roads and additional tipping platforms would reduce congestion, improve truck turnaround time and strengthen the overall efficiency of municipal waste disposal across the state.
He described the intervention as another example of how strategic public-private collaboration can support government efforts to improve environmental sanitation.
The project also received commendation from operators within Lagos’ waste management sector.
National President of the Association of Waste Managers of Nigeria (AWAMN), Dr. Olugbenga Adebola, described the intervention as a significant contribution to improving operational efficiency across the state’s waste management value chain.
He particularly applauded the fact that the rehabilitation was executed entirely as a CSR initiative.
“We cannot overemphasize the need for prompt access to the disposal site. Kudos to Zoomlion Nigeria, we appreciate this intervention. More importantly, this was undertaken purely as a CSR initiative, meaning that not a single dime was spent by Lagos State or the PSP operators. That is truly commendable.”
Similarly, Secretary of the Waste Managers Association of Nigeria (WAMASON), Engr. Yusuf Adelodun, expressed satisfaction with both the quality and speed of execution.
According to him, many stakeholders initially doubted the project could be completed within the proposed timeline.
“I was amazed when I arrived here. No one would have believed this could be achieved within just 26 days. When we first heard about the project, many of us were sceptical. Today, Zoomlion Nigeria has delivered, and we can all see the results. It is real it is not AI.”
Building Lagos’ Waste Infrastructure Network
Beyond the access road rehabilitation, Zoomlion Nigeria is implementing major infrastructure projects under the Lagos Waste Management Improvement Project, designed to modernise waste collection, transfer and resource recovery.
Among the flagship projects are two Transfer Loading Stations (TLSs) currently under construction at Olusosun and Solous III.
Upon completion, each facility is expected to process approximately 2,500 metric tonnes of municipal waste daily, allowing refuse collected from different parts of Lagos to be consolidated before transportation to final disposal or treatment facilities.
The new transfer stations are expected to reduce travel distances for collection trucks, lower operational costs and improve fleet productivity while strengthening the state’s waste logistics system.
Zoomlion Nigeria is also developing Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) aimed at increasing recycling capacity and supporting Lagos’ transition toward a circular economy.
The facilities will recover recyclable materials from municipal waste streams, reducing dependence on landfill disposal while promoting resource recovery and environmental sustainability.
According to the company, these complementary investments will help create a modern integrated waste management system aligned with international best practices.
As Lagos continues to experience rapid population growth and urban expansion, experts agree that investments in waste management infrastructure will become increasingly important.
Efficient waste collection systems improve public health by reducing environmental pollution, preventing blocked drainage channels and minimising disease outbreaks associated with poor sanitation.
Infrastructure such as transfer stations, recycling facilities and improved landfill access also contributes to lower greenhouse gas emissions by reducing truck idling time, fuel consumption and unnecessary transportation distances.
For residents, the benefits are expected to translate into faster refuse collection, cleaner streets and healthier communities.
A Partnership for Cleaner Cities
The collaboration between Zoomlion Nigeria and the Lagos State Government reflects a growing recognition that sustainable waste management requires coordinated action between the public and private sectors.
While government provides policy direction and regulatory oversight, private-sector expertise and investment can accelerate the delivery of critical infrastructure needed to keep pace with rapid urbanisation.
By combining engineering solutions with long-term investments in waste transfer, recycling and environmental infrastructure, the partnership seeks to position Lagos as a model for integrated waste management in Africa.
For Zoomlion Nigeria, the Olusosun rehabilitation is more than the completion of an access road.
It represents the beginning of a broader effort to strengthen Nigeria’s environmental infrastructure through practical investments that improve operational efficiency, promote resource recovery and support cleaner, healthier and more resilient cities.
