Media Executive Laments Dearth of Environment Reporting in Nigeria

The Founder and CEO of Nature News Aliu Akoshile, has highlighted the urgent need for increased coverage of environmental issues in Nigeria’s media landscape.

Akoshile also emphasized that the environment is underreported, and urged journalists to play a more active role in raising awareness and driving positive change.

Speaking on Tuesday, July 18, 2023, at A 2 Day Environmental Journalism Workshop at Dangote Academy Obajana in Kogi State for journalists in North central Nigeria stated that the workshop is aimed at equipping journalists with the necessary tools and knowledge to effectively cover environmental issues and promote sustainable practices.

Akoshile, a renowned environmentalist and advocate for sustainable development, expressed concern over the inadequate attention given to environmental issues in Nigeria.

He stressed that the environment is fundamental to the well-being and future of the country, and its neglect in media coverage is detrimental to both the environment and the Nigerian population.

“Nigeria is facing numerous environmental challenges, including deforestation, pollution, climate change, and biodiversity loss. However, these issues are often overlooked or given minimal coverage by the media.

“It is essential that we prioritize environmental reporting to highlight the urgency and importance of preserving our natural resources,” he said.

He further emphasised that environmental sustainability is an attitude and a way of life that everyone must contribute to preserving.

“The environment has existed before us, and we need it more than it needs us. Therefore, we must protect it from harm for our own benefit as humans,” he added.

Akoshile pointed out that the International Press Institute (IPI) reports have recently raised concerns about the lack of priority given to environmental reporting in the media.

He highlighted that without a conducive environment, there cannot be free movement of both humans and animals, nor can activities like sports, businesses, and other important endeavours thrive.

Akoshile called on journalists to dig deeper into environmental stories, investigate root causes, and explore potential solutions.

He emphasized the need for accurate, balanced reporting that engages and informs the public, spurring them to take action.
