The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has stated that the police will launch a green initiative as part of the police’s emission reduction program, early next year.
Egbetokun announced while speaking to DA NEWS at a side event titled “The Nigeria Police Carbon Reduction Programme,” held at the Nigeria Pavilion on the sidelines of the ongoing COP 28 in Dubai.
The police chief said the Green Initiative is a sustainable development program designed to provide green solutions that will support Nigeria’s transition to a low-carbon economy.
Recognizing the global shift towards sustainable energy, the IGP highlighted the Police Force’s active involvement in facilitating energy transition initiatives to reduce the environmental footprint.
As part of a key developmental strategy, the IGP announced initiatives such as tree planting in all Police commands and formations, using gas to drive Police patrol vans, a continuous campaign for renewable energy initiatives in Nigeria, and a strategic approach to light up communities and police stations aims to create well-lit and secure environments, contributing to a reduction in crime rates and fostering community development.
Egbetokun believes this initiative will not only help combat climate change but also enhance the police force’s capacity to maintain law and order effectively.
He added that the program is also aimed at boosting the operational efficiency and crime-fighting capacity of the police force.
According to him “There is a growing concern about climate change around the world,” said Egbetokun.
“What the police is doing is blazing the trail so that other government agencies will follow suit.”
He said the Green Initiative will serve as the police’s contribution to Nigeria’s global commitment to mitigating the effects of climate change.
