Nigeria Pledges Leadership in Tackling Plastic Waste Crisis in Africa

The Federal Government of Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a leadership role in addressing the plastic waste crisis in Africa.

This pledge was made by the Special Presidential Envoy on Climate Action Ajuri Ngelale, during a meeting with technical teams from the World Economic Forum’s Center of Nature & Climate on Wednesday in Geneva.

Ngelale emphasized Nigeria’s status as the continent’s top performer in managing plastic waste and outlined plans to incentivize industries to adopt improved waste management practices.

“Nigeria will continue to enhance its efforts in plastic waste management by promoting collection and advanced recycling within the Evergreen City’s waste-to-energy district, thereby generating wealth through a circular economic ecosystem,” he said.

In his address, Ngelale shared President Bola Tinubu’s vision for green industrialization and detailed the extensive climate action initiatives currently underway in Nigeria.

He highlighted Nigeria’s ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability and its proactive approach to addressing the plastic waste crisis, setting a benchmark for other African nations to follow.

He underscored the critical role of global partnerships in achieving significant climate action outcomes and creating green economic opportunities for the country.

“We are optimistic about the collaborative efforts between Nigeria and the international community in tackling climate issues and fostering economic growth through sustainable practices,” Ngelale stated.

He highlighted the importance of leveraging international cooperation to drive impactful climate action and expressed confidence in Nigeria’s ability to lead the continent in innovative waste management solutions.
