Industry leaders at Nigeria Air Week 2026 in Lagos called for a clear national roadmap on Sustainable Aviation Fuel and accelerated fleet modernisation to keep Nigeria competitive in a decarbonising global market.
The three-day event brought together regulators, airline CEOs, financiers, and aircraft lessors.
Director-General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, Capt. Chris Najomo said regulatory reforms would align Nigeria with evolving ICAO emissions standards.
“We must ensure safety and sustainability go hand in hand,” he said.
Airline operators urged the Federal Government to introduce tax incentives for green fleet acquisition and SAF blending trials.
Dr. Gabriel Olowo of Sabre Network Africa said financing remains the primary barrier.
“Aircraft renewal reduces emissions immediately. But without forex stability and financing access, airlines struggle,” he noted.
Panel discussions also addressed hydrogen propulsion prospects, though most stakeholders agreed SAF remains the realistic medium-term solution.
Participants resolved to form a joint working group ahead of ICAO Climate Week in Montréal.
