Ministry of Aviation in Abuja Unveils Draft Net-Zero Aviation Framework

Nigeria’s Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development has unveiled a draft National Net-Zero Aviation Framework aimed at aligning the country with ICAO’s 2050 decarbonisation target.

At a policy dialogue today in Abuja, Minister Festus Keyamo said Nigeria cannot afford to be reactive in global aviation sustainability discussions.

“The future of aviation financing will depend on environmental compliance. Nigeria must prepare early,” he said.

The draft framework outlines phased SAF adoption, airspace efficiency reforms, and incentives for newer aircraft acquisition.

Officials from the Ministry of Environment confirmed that aviation emissions will be integrated into Nigeria’s updated Nationally Determined Contributions.

A senior ministry official said collaboration with NNPC Limited on biofuel feasibility studies is ongoing.

Experts welcomed the move but cautioned against slow implementation.

Dr. Chinwe Egbunike, a climate policy researcher, said timelines and measurable targets must be clearly defined.

“Frameworks are good. Execution is everything,” she said.

Public consultations are expected to continue through March 2026.
