Baku to Host Parliamentary Meeting Ahead of COP29 in November 2024

The Speaker of the 6th convocation of the Azerbaijani Milli Majlis (Parliament) Sahiba Gafarova, has revealed that Baku will host a pivotal parliamentary meeting in November 2024 as part of the COP29 framework.

Gafarova made this announcement on Friday, July 12, 2024, during her address at the Parliamentary Forum of the BRICS countries in St. Petersburg, Russia.

She emphasized the crucial role of parliaments in addressing the climate crisis, noting that this meeting will offer parliamentarians a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas and devise strategies to combat climate change.

“This parliamentary meeting will provide a conducive platform for dialogue and collaboration, essential for driving multilateral efforts in the fight against climate change,” Gafarova said.

She extended an invitation to the forum participants to attend the session in Baku.

In a related development, Boris Titov, the Russian President’s Special Envoy for Relations with International Organisations to achieve Sustainable Development Goals, will embark on a working visit to Azerbaijan from July 12 to 15, 2024.

Titov’s visit will include high-level meetings with Azerbaijani Deputy Prime Minister Ali Ahmadov, Minister of Economy Mikayil Jabbarov, and Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Mukhtar Babayev. The visit is part of the preparations for COP29, which is set to take place in Baku in November 2024.

Titov’s office stated that these discussions aim to strengthen cooperation and align strategies ahead of the global climate conference. The visit underscores the importance of collaborative efforts and international partnerships in tackling climate-related challenges.

The upcoming COP29 in Baku is expected to be a significant event, drawing global attention to climate action and sustainability efforts.
