COP 29: Azerbaijan’s Level of Preparedness Received Positive Assessment from UN

The Head of the Presidential Administration of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Chairman of the COP 29 Organizing Committee Samir Nuriyev, has revealed that the UN has commended the level of preparedness to host the annual world climate conference.

Nuriyev highlighted Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev’s delineation of key directions and framework for the COP29 Chairmanship agenda during discussions at the Southern Gas Corridor Advisory Council meeting and an interview with “Euronews” TV channel.

Addressing concerns about countries rich in oil and natural gas, Nuriyev stressed the importance of evaluating their environmental contributions fairly.

He noted Azerbaijan’s recent commitment to the “Global Methane Pledge,” aimed at reducing methane emissions by 30 percent by 2030 compared to 2020.

In an effort to ensure inclusivity, Nuriyev mentioned the expansion of the Organizing Committee to include Members of Parliament and civil society representatives, following the directive of the head of state.

Highlighting Azerbaijan’s approved Action Plan to declare 2024 as the “Green World Solidarity Year” and the ongoing preparation of the Action Plan for COP29, Nuriyev emphasized the importance of aligning both plans.

He underscored Azerbaijan’s capacity to serve as a bridge between the Global South and Global North, drawing from its successful chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement and active participation in other international organizations.

He pledged Azerbaijan’s commitment to fostering global solidarity and consensus at COP29.

Nuriyev also commended the establishment of the “Troika” mechanism involving the United Arab Emirates, Azerbaijan, and Brazil regarding COP, viewing it as a positive step towards enhancing cooperation and coordination.
