As part of its advocacy against plastic pollution The Green Globe Initiative (GGI), an environmental NGO, has trained students from selected secondary schools in Ilorin on plastic up-cycling.
Tagged ‘The Craft and Plant Education Programme’, led by GGI’s Executive Director, Mr. Akintola Akinyemi, was focused on transforming plastics into flowerpots to combat plastic pollution in Kwara State.
Akinyemi while speaking at the training said the participating schools, Molly’s School and C & S College both Ilorin, were chosen to facilitate knowledge transfer as a way of the initiative aimed to reduce plastics entering waterways and drainages, mitigating environmental harm caused by non-degradable plastics.
“If plastics can be up-cycled, it will create a safer environment and fulfill another need. The choice of schools aligned with GGI’s strategy to empower students to share acquired knowledge with their peers,” he said.
In her remark proprietor of Molly’s School Mrs. Omolara Olanrewaju, commended the initiative, which she says aligns with the school’s Montessori curriculum focused on recycling.
She said the program’s initiative if adopted by all will reduce environmental waste and create a cleaner atmosphere.
Similarly Vice Principal, Special Duty, C & S College Mrs. Eunice Gana, praised the dual benefits of up-cycling, providing students with a potential source of income while fostering an environmentally friendly society.
Participants, including JSS 3 students Feranmi Okunade and Oluyole Beatrice, expressed a newfound appreciation for turning plastic bottles, considered trash, into beautiful pieces. Okunade pledged to apply the learned skills, while Beatrice vowed to replicate the training and potentially sell her creations.
The Craft and Plant Education Programme is part of GGI’s broader efforts to address the plastic pollution crisis in Kwara, reflecting a commitment to sustainable environmental practices.
